Ambitious plans for Ukrainian football stadium project

Shakhtar Donetsk FC, one of the Ukraine's premier football teams, has unveiled plans for a new 50,000-seat venue designed to be a flagship stadium for Eastern Europe. The US$200m project signals the club's ambitions to break into the ranks of the European elite. It will replace the existing 31,700-seat venue and is set to be built in Leninsky Komsomol Park in Donetsk. A general contractor will be named next month. Site works will begin in April 2005, with the completion targeted to allow games to be played at the stadium from the start of season 2007/08.
