English Birmingham City more than doubled its first-half pretax profit, but tempered any enthusiasm with the warning that relegation could cause a downturn next season.
The football club posted a pretax profit of GBP 7.25 million for the six-month period ending 29 Feb. 2008. That was up from GBP 3.13 million. Revenue rose to GBP 32.58 million from 14.27 million.
Relegation from the Premiership will have a significant financial effect. The club said it expects broadcast and media income to be down GBP 12 million, and to have a smaller revenue stream from ticket sales, sponsorship and commercial enterprises.
Some of that could be offset by Premier League parachute payments of approximately GBP 12 million.
