Re-bidding set for TV rights in Belgium

The Belgian Professional Football League has suspended TV contract bidding for the top-tier Juplier League when it felt the rights did not earn high enough monetary offers.

The max offer was EUR 44.7 million a season for the rights from 2009-2010. The bidding was rescheduled for later in the week, likely 23 May. The league had targeted EUR 50 million a season as its minimum.

Belgacom reportedly bid EUR 36.7 million a season, while VRT and RTBF jointly offered EUR 8 million.

Belgacom acquired all the broadcast rights from 2005-06 to 2007-08 for EUR 36 million a season, and then sub-licensed the rights to VRT and RTBF.

Rights from 2009-10 onwards were split into seven packages, with Belgacom bidding for the pay-television packages and VRT and RTBF making offers for the free-to-air packages.
