Liverpool turmoil could go on through summer

The turmoil in the boardroom might drag on for English Liverpool.

Dubai International Capital (DIC) had a deal in place with co-owner George Gillett, but that was blocked by Hicks. DIC has been waiting to unseat Hicks, who has had some difficulty with loans during the credit crunch.

And, when it seemed likely Gillett could bypass Hicks' veto, there was an administrative miscue on his part, making it less likely his 50-percent share will end in DIC's corner. He also is attempting to buy Gillett's share, something that would douse DIC's plans, but require financial help.

DIC may have to wait until October, when Hicks promised that construction work will begin on Liverpool's new 60,000-seat stadium. If Hicks has issues with financing the GBP 350 million project, it could force his hand in a deal.

Hicks insists it will be ready for the 2011 season.

There also is pressure from players to improve over the summer. The club did not land any major trophies this season, and is watching as Manchester United rides over the rest of the league.

"Other teams are going to strengthen, so it's important we do the same," captain Steven Gerrard said to the Independent. "There is a lot of money in the league. To keep doing well in the league and Europe we need to strengthen the squad."
