ITV found its Champions League investment well worth it, as the match between English clubs Chelsea and Liverpool brought in a peak of 10.2 million viewers and an average of 8.1 million.
That gave ITV1 an average audience share of 32.9 percent. It also bettered earlier ITV1 matches, including a Liverpool-Arsenal meeting that drew 10.1 million.
The closest competition came from 'Holby City', which aired on BBC to an average audience of 5.4 million.
One troubling trend for ITV is that it cannot hold the audience beyond football. After the match ended, with an own goal providing a 1-all draw between Chelsea and Liverpool, BBC programme "Waking the Dead' had its audience jump from 5.9 million to 6.5 million.
ITV1's news programme at 10 drew only 5 million.
