UEFA wants heart checks for all players

UEFA wants to implement a plan in which every European professional player gets a heart test before the start of the season.

Those taking part in this season's European Championship will undergo the exams. UEFA's next goal is to have it reach across Europe. A medical committee advised the governing body to have team doctors check all EURO participants before the tournament.

A series of shocking heart-related tragedies have come a out lately. In December, Phil O' Donnell, the 35-year-old Scottish Motherwell captain and former Scotland midfielder, collapsed and died during a Scottish Premier League match against Dundee United.

Spanish Sevilla midfielder Antonio Puerta, aged 22, died in August 2007, three days after collapsing during a Spanish league match. Four years prior, Cameroonian international Marc Vivien Foe died during the Confederations Cup in France.
