MLS gets Sounders in Seattle

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
The new MLS club in Seattle will be named the Seattle Sounders FC.

The club conducted a fan ballot for the name, given the options of Seattle FC, Seattle Alliance and Seattle Republic. More than 14,500 voted online, but more than half of the votes were write-in, and the majority of those favoured Sounders.

The write-in name received 20 percent more votes than the other choices.

Seattle has a long history with the nickname Sounders. The city had a North American Soccer League club, and a United Soccer League 1st Division club called the Sounders.

The name Sounders has been identified with soccer in this community since 1974.

The team also unveiled its logo, a triangle-shaped badge that includes an image of the Space Needle. Team colors are Sounder Blue, Rave Green and Cascade Shale.
