Obi case could mean Chelsea suit

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
A verdict in a Norwegian case has English Chelsea pondering legal action for signing a player whose professional contract had been forged.

Chelsea paid GBP 4 million to Norwegian Lyn for Mikel John Obi. A former Lyn executive just lost a court case to Obi, who claimed his first professional contract was a forgery.

Morgan Andersen was given a one-year jail sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to pay costs. He plans to appeal. Obi was not a professional when he first joined Lyn, but a contract was signed as soon as he turned 18.

It now is revealed to be forged.

The move had repercussions. Obi left Lyn for English Manchester United, but later claimed he was forced to sign. He asked to join Chelsea, a case that was settled only when Chelsea paid GBP 12 million to Manchester United and GBP 4 million to Lynn.

That could give Chelsea a legal claim, with Lyn using fraudulent representation.
