MLS expand to Philadelphia

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
MLS awarded its 16th club when Philadelphia was given an expansion franchise for 2010.

The new club, funded by a consortium of businessmen, will play in Chester, a suburb of Philadelphia, where a 20,000-seat, football-specific stadium is being built. The franchise already has a supporters group known as "The Sons of Ben".

League commissioner Don Garber said the club's location made it a natural rival with Washington, D.C. and New York City.

It's the third expansion of late for the league. The San Jose Earthquakes are joining this upcoming season, and a Seattle franchise has been awarded for 2009.

There could be more ahead. Detroit, Miami and St. Louis all have groups expressing interest in the league.
