Scudamore claims clubs have not broken ranks on 39th match
England - 15 February, 2008
Premier League chief executive, Richard Scudamore, said he still has the backing of the 20 English Premier League clubs on playing overseas matches.
This comes after the league chief executive heard the bad news that Australia, Japan and the United States showed misgivings on whether to stage contests in their nations. The U.S. said it would follow FIFA's lead on the matter.
FIFA and UEFA did not appear to be thrilled with the plan. Both governing bodies are not likely to endorse it.
Supporters groups and some politicians have come out against the idea.
Scudamore still remains by the idea of a 39th match starting in 2010, and said objections at home won't deter him or the clubs from following through with the plan.
"It is important we have the support of the 20 clubs and we still have the support of the 20 clubs to investigate and look at the proposal," Scudamore told Sky Sports News. "The media have tried to make some idea that people are breaking ranks, but everybody is in the same position.
"We had a good meeting yesterday at the professional game board of the Football Association where we explained some more details to our Football League and FA colleagues."
