Rugby, handball dethrone football as top European viewing for 2007
Pan-European - 04 February, 2008
Rugby and handball became the most popular sports to watch on TV in Europe in 2007, dethroning football.
The TV Sports Markets Survey said the rugby union World Cup topped the viewing in France and the United Kingdom. The final of the World Handball Championship played well in Germany, drawing the greatest sports viewership over the past decade in that country for a non-football event.
Handball also topped Denmark and Norway in terms of sport viewership.
Champions League football drew its best audiences in Italy and Spain. Formula One racing was second in both nations.
In Finland, the ice hockey World Championship drew the most, it was speed skating in the Netherlands. Skiing was most popular in Sweden, Switzerland and Slovenia.
