LFP open up second round of bidding

The French football league (LFP) has opened up a second round of bidding on its controversial four-year broadcast rights plan.

The second round, which was not expected to occur, likely will pit current rightsholder Canal Plus against mobile operator Orange for some of the premium packages.

The league had 31 offers from nine bidders. Orange bid on all 12 packages, and Canal Plus on 10.

No award has yet been made.

Offers for some of the packages included attempts by mobile company SFR, TF1 television, M6 television, state-owned France Televisions and digital channel Direct8.

The league had hoped the new four-year set up would attract more than the EUR 660 it now receives. Canal Plus said it would not pay as much this time for the offerings and challenged the packages through the legal system. It has one final court challenge pending, slated for Feb. 19.
