MLS commissioner said Beckham has helped league MLS commissioner played up David Beckham's money-making ability, saying at a news conference that he expected the L.A. Galaxy star signee should make at least USD 250 million on his five-year deal.
"He's just an incredible marketing machine," commissioner Don Garber said at the Reuters Media Summit in New York.
Beckham's money will be tied into revenue sharing and endorsements, as well as salary. Garber said Beckham's base salary totals USD 5.5 million a year.
Garber has been busy adding expansion clubs to the MLS, with a goal of 18 clubs in 2010 or 2011. He said that Beckham's presence has helped that.
"David gave us credibility," Garber said. "We shocked the world really by signing him."
Garber said the state of the MLS is as strong as ever, and liked his league's chances of buying a stake in either Fox or GolTv, two of the networks that air MLS contests.
