Club, player reps oppose Platini's Champions League plan
FIFA & UEFA - 14 November, 2007
The UEFA council made up of player and club reps gave a thumbs down to UEFA president Michel Platini's plan of having national tournament winners in the Champions League.
Though the council was fine with more representation from Europe's smaller nations, it did not want national cup winners to participate in the tournament. UEFA's executive committee will get the next — and final — say on Platini's proposal on 30 Nov.
Platini's original platform for the presidency was based on opening the Champions League to smaller nations.
But he has had to backtrack and compromise at points. Platini wanted to remove one of the four spots reserved from the top nations and give them to smaller nations. Qualifying rounds were pitched, as were cup winners.
