Real Salt Lake stadium coming together

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
The Real Salt Lake stadium is taking shape in more ways than one.

The steel frame is being put up, and roughly 200 people are working on the site, trying to get the 20,000-seat stadium opened in time for the fall 2008 debut. The stadium is ahead of schedule for an on-time completion.

One of the stadium goals is to be "green friendly", in that it will sewer water will be piped in to water the pitch.

The Sandy, Utah Planning Commission has been encouraging development in the area to give the zone an entertainment district feel.

The project was held up originally over the bond issue and hotel taxes. But the bonds were approved, and all USD 35 million allotted from hotel taxes has almost all been sunk into the project. About USD 20 million was used to buy the land where the stadium's frame now sits.

Luxury boxes are being sold, with 20 of 32 already accounted for, even with the prices between USD 22,000 and USD 45,000 a year.

Another hurdle was parking. Real Salt Lake guaranteed it would have at least 5,300 slots at the stadium site or within 15 minutes walking distance. Parking must be ready at least 120 days before the stadium opens.
