English Southampton is in such dire financial straits that the club may conduct a sell-off of players during the January transfer window.
With takeover talks stalled, Southampton Leisure Holdings released a statement that hinted at a sell-off. The company has been in negotiations with Sisu Capital over control of the club, and has rejected the first offer from Sisu, which was at 20-percent of the share worth.
"The directors would require to trade players during the transfer window to generate funds for the remainder of the financial year," read the statement. "The sale of players in January would, in the opinion of the directors, be likely to have an adverse impact on the company's ability to achieve promotion to the Premier League."
"While the company's bankers continue to support the company, they have indicated that they will not passively sit by and watch the liquidity position of the company deteriorate over the coming year."
