Missing EURO 2008 would cost the FA GBP 8 million

A little extra financial help for English football hinges on the national team qualifying for EURO 2008.

The Football Association will lose more than GBP 8 million in merchandising and sponsorship if the national team does not make it, a precarious situation as England now must "scoreboard watch" as other teams' results will decide if the team advances.

"First and foremost we are not out of it yet, we can still qualify though admittedly it is no longer in our hands," said one FA insider. "If we did fail to qualify, there would be no significant impact on our financial structure."

The FA still will have more than GBP 100 million in TV contracts. The GBP 8 million would be more bonus money to help with some plans for the national teams.
