Agents argue the FA proposal

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
Agents are going to argue the English Football Association proposal that they should not represent a player and a club in a transfer deal, with a leading agent saying that, on occasion, there are times when an agent can represent both sides.

A conference will be used to update agents on the rash of rules changes. The highlights are expected to be that agents not represent both sides in a transfer deal, that players only pay the agents as opposed to players and/or clubs, and that there be no agent payments to club officials.

Michael Zen-Ruffinen, the chairman of the Association of Football Agents (AFA), will address the conference delegates, which include FA head of governance Jonathan Hall and sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe, in trying to counter with some agent ideas.

Zen-Ruffinen said the AFA believe there is no problem for a club to be allowed to make a payment to an agent for facilitating a transfer even if his player is the one signed.

"We still have six points where we are saying we need some modification and we are still having discussions and meetings with the FA on those matters to find a compromise acceptable to everybody," Zen-Ruffinen said. "The basic principle is that it is not good to act for two parties at the same time unless the two parties ask for the same representative, because it can make it much simpler and less expensive."
