FIFA 2010 trademark labeled "draconian" by S.A. official
World Cup 2010 - 06 September, 2007
South Africa's government is pushing FIFA to ease its trademark laws leading up to the 2010 World Cup.
Government unit director-general Joe Phaahla described some of the laws as "quite draconian." Phaahla went on to say that pushing to trademark the year 2010 was too much.
"They want everything to do with 2010 to be theirs," he said. "If nobody objects, the DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) ill be left vulnerable."
Phaahla urged South Africans to support the DTI in its case to put pressure on FIFA to relax trademark laws so that ordinary people can also benefit.
Phaahla encouraged people to come up with business plans, and warned that people should be able to sustain businesses beyond 2010.
