Record-breaking numbers have followed David Beckham to the MLS, even though the former England captain’s spell has yet to take off due to a series of injuries.
Not only are Beckham paraphernalia selling at a record pace and crowds turning out in record numbers, but people also are viewing the MLS website in record droves.
The Beckham effect has translated online. Web analyst company comScore said visitors to the official MLS website rose 117 percent from July 2006 to July 2007, coinciding with Beckham's debut for MLS L.A. Galaxy.
A total of more than one million unique visitors hit the site, the top total in MLS web history. By comparison, the site attracted around 230,000 unique users in December 2006. The figure increased to 808,000 the following month when the Galaxy confirmed it had signed Beckham.
