Thaksin faces Thai arrest warrant

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
Thaksin Shinawatra, English Manchester City's new owner, now has a warrant for his arrest issued in his old nation of Thailand.

The Thai Supreme Court issued the warrant for the nation's former prime minister. Thaksin has been in England in exile after being deposed in a coup almost a year ago.

The warrant was issued for Thaksin and his wife Pojamarn, in connection with corruption charges over a controversial land purchase deal in Bangkok. References to that deal were common during Thaksin's attempt to but Manchester City earlier this summer.

A spokesman for Thaksin claimed the move was politically-motivated.

"No doubt this latest publicity stunt by the military government has nothing to do with the referendum on the constitution taking place later this week," Thaksin's spokesman said.
