Premiere regains Bundesliga TV rights

In a deal that required regulatory approval, German pay-TV broadcaster Premiere regained the rights to show Bundesliga in a deal with cable television operator UnityMedia.

Premiere originally lost the rights to UnityMedia in December 2005. Now, Premiere has the sub-license pay-TV rights for the Bundesliga and second division from the upcoming season through 2008-2009.

As part of the pact, Premiere will take over the TV rights for the Spanish Primera División and the English Premier League.

The German Cartel Office had concerns over an agreement between the two.

"This transaction strengthens Premiere sustainably – both in economic and strategic terms," said Dr. Georg Kofler, CEO of Premiere AG. "Premiere now offers more attractive programming than ever before. This transaction substantially increases the brand value of Premiere as the leading pay-TV operator in Europe's largest media market."
