Players for English Leeds United have not received their last salary payment, and the Professional Footballers' Association has help crisis talks with club officials and administrator KPMG.
The players agreed to defer their wages as the club has been beset by controversy in the offseason, which has cost them the right to leave the club by way of a free transfer.
If the players' June salaries do not arrive at a certain point, they can break their contracts and transfer for free. But the process has dragged on longer than anticipated, rattling many nerves.
"It's an absolute mess and it needs to be resolved urgently because the players are reaching the end of their tethers," said PFA deputy chief executive Mick McGuire. "I'm hopeful that there will be a resolution in the next 24 to 48 hours which will see the players being paid . . . we just need a little flexibility on everyone's part."
