Police raid British clubs looking for illegal transfer evidence

Police in Britain conducted a series of raids, trying to ferret out illegal transfer activity.

Targeted were English Newcastle United and Portsmouth and Scottish Rangers. All three clubs had their offices raided. A couple of private residences were hit by the police as well.

The police were looking at a couple of transfers, including when Portsmouth sent Amdy Faye to Newcastle, and when Jean-Alain Boumsong went from Rangers to Newcastle. Both occurred in early 2005. The Faye deal was for GBP 2 million, while Boumsong cost GBP 8.2 million.

Both of the deals – while supposedly unrelated to the police raids – were once that Lord Stevens would not sign off on during his bungs inquiry. This is part of an ongoing investigation, with an arrest of a 61-year old accountant made in March.

A spokesman for Newcastle said there was no suggestion of wrongdoing inside "the club itself."

Police cut into Newcastle during the morning Monday, cutting off employee access to the computer system. They hit Portsmouth at 10 a.m., and went after the paperwork for Faye.
