Money-laundering arrest order for Joorbchian

Kia Joorbchian has run into legal troubles in Brazil, with a judge in that nation issuing an order for his arrest on charges of money laundering.

Joorbchian is a well-known football agent, infamous for his role in the third-party signings of Carlos Tevez and Javier Maschareno at English West Ham. Those signings have caused many headaches for the Premier League with its lack of points penalty against West Ham.

Joorbchian, who has declared his innocence, is accused of being involved in money laundering involving Brazilian Corinthians. MSI, a subsidiary of an offshore investment company, has been under investigation in Brazil since it took over the club in December 2004.

The prosecuting attorneys have accused Joorbchian and MSI of using offshore accounts to money-launder transactions involving football players.

Sao Paulo-based judge Fausto Martin de Sanctis also ordered the arrest of MSI-linked Iranian businessman Nojan Bedroud and Russian Boris Berezovsky, accused of being the financial power behind the scheme.

MSI's bank accounts in Brazil have been frozen
