MLS L.A. Galaxy has braced itself for the David Beckham onslaught, preordering more than 250,000 Beckham shirts – before the uniforms have been unveiled.
"We're already well over a quarter of a million units that were ordered ... without knowledge of what they were going to look like," said Galaxy president Alexi Lalas on the club's website. "We will look to do significant numbers and historic numbers not just with an MLS context but with an international jersey context."
Spanish Real Madrid, Beckham's old club, sold more than one million Beckham shirts during his stay there. Real Madrid's marketing director estimated Beckham's financial impact on the club to be well over USD 600 million, not counting any monetary effects from the club's recent title.
