Now that they are parting ways, Spanish Real Madrid can be satisfied that it received more than its fair share from the David Beckham deal.
The original transfer fee was EUR 45 million in 2003. The Beckham-related profits at the club now are projected at EUR 560 million over four years, including the sale of one million Beckham shirts within six months of the transfer.
"Profits from merchandising increased by 137 percent," said Jose Sanchez, the club's marketing director. "And these figures do not take into account the USD 230 million prize money for winning the Spanish title (this past season)."
MLS LA Galaxy president Alexi Lalas said, since signing Beckham, his club has moved more tickets and merchandise than it has come close to in the past.
