Appeals court ask clarification in FIFA MasterCard case

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
A U.S. appeals court asked that a lower court review a December ruling on MasterCard's sponsorship for the 2010 and 2014 World Cup Tournaments.

At that time, a U.S. District court ruled that MasterCard should get the eight-year World Cup dea rather than rival Visa. The court ruled that FIFA breached its contract with MasterCard by switching World Cup sponsorship rights for the period to Visa. In that decision, the judge said FIFA negotiators "lied repeatedly to MasterCard."

The U.S. Court of Appeals said the judge needed clarify whether the 2006 agreement between MasterCard and FIFA was binding, and whether it would supersede a 2002 contract in which MasterCard said it had the right of first refusal on a new pact.

MasterCard issued a statement that said it "looks forward to Judge Preska addressing this particular issue and final resolution of the ongoing matter."
