Thaksin likely to reign in Manchester City

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra seems poised to seize control of English Machester City.

Thaksin visited the stadium for the first time, and has indicated he does not want to appoint another British manager, which could have led to the dismissal of manager Stuart Pearce.

Thaksin currently is in a period of due diligence with the club. His worth is estimated at GBP 2 billion. That could lead to more money to lure players to the club.

But, there are issues. Human rights activists accused Thaksin's administration of various offences, especially in relation to a hardline anti-drug campaign. Human Rights Watch claims this led to more than 2,000 extra-judicial killings in Thailand in 2003 alone.

In 2004, Thaksin launched a failed bid to buy Liverpool. Eight months ago, he was overthrown by a military junta and warned against returning to Thailand.

A deal with Thaksin could put Manchester City on a financial level seemed unattainable.
