A list of salaries sent out by the Major League Soccer Players Union shows expansion side Toronto FC's USD 2.4 million payroll is larger than almost half the clubs in the division.
Toronto is leading the 2006 MLS champions Houston Dynamo, which spent USD 2.3 million this season, and in front of powerhouses New England and D.C., which spent USD 2 million and USD 2.1 million respectively, according to the Toronto Sun.
Among Toronto players, midfielder Carl Robinson is the highest paid at USD 315,000, with Ronnie O'Brien, who makes USD 258,750, and Andy Welsh, who makes USD 204,750 following close behind. Their salaries include signing and performance bonuses built into the contracts.
"The annual average guaranteed compensation number includes a player's base salary and all signing and guaranteed bonuses annualized over the term of the player's contract, including option years," union rep Bob Foose said. "For example, if a player has a base salary of USD 50,000, has a two-year contract with two one-year options and received a USD 10,000 bonus when he signed, his average annual guaranteed compensation would be USD 52,500."
The Los Angeles Galaxy has the largest payroll at USD 9.2 million, but the USD 6.5 million salary of highest-paid MLS player David Beckham uses up most of that.
While Beckham is preparing for his L.A. Galaxy debut in early July, there are players earning USD 16,250 and USD 22,000 a year, and according to figures released, all are young Americans starting their professional careers.
Mexican striker Cuauhtémoc Blanco of Chicago Fire is second to Beckham with a base salary of almost USD 3 million and guaranteed compensation of over USD 3 million. Red Bulls midfielder Claudio Reyna, who played in Europe for more than a decade, has a base salary of USD 1.2 million and guaranteed compensation of USD 1.5 million.
Another Red Bulls' star, former English Aston Villa striker, Juan Pablo Angel, will make USD 1.7 million in base pay and USD 1.8 million guaranteed. L.A. Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan will earn USD 1 million in base pay, while Kansas City striker Eddie Johnson will make USD 850,000 in base pay, USD 950,000 guaranteed, and Freddy Adu, who was sold by D.C. United to Real Salt Lake, will make U.S. guaranteed up to USD 700,000.
