Toronto FC became the third Major League Soccer (MLS) club to sign a contract with a jersey sponsor.
Bank of Montreal (BMO), will continue it's partnership with the expansion franchise and has locked up a deal for the naming rights to Toronto FC's new stadium, which will be appropriately named BMO Field.
The bank will have its name and corporate logo on the front of Toronto's uniforms. Details regarding specific dollar amounts were not released at the unveiling, but Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) president and CEO Richard Peddie said "it's not insignificant."
Peddie said the new deal will last for 5 years and is completely separate from all other sponsorship deals that the club has already established with BMO.
When Red Bull purchased the Metrostars last season, it started a practice that has been used in Europe for some time and opened the door for other clubs to take advantage of selling the front of its jerseys to corporate sponsors.
Since then Real Salt Lake announced a deal with Xango juice worth a reported USD 4- USD 5 million over four years.
The L.A. Galaxy's deal with Herbalife is estimated to be worth between USD 3.5 - USD 5 million a year.
