Edinburgh City Council gave the go ahead for Scottish Hearts to buy the land next to the club's Tynecastle stadium.
Hearts will pay GBP 6 million and will now have to obtain planning permission for the construction of a new main stand, which will increase the stadium's capacity to 26,000.
The club hopes to increase the size of Tynecastle in the future to a projected capacity of 40,000.
"This is a hugely significant landmark and a very big day for the club," said a Hearts' spokesman.
"Our investment in new facilities at Tynecastle will be one part of a major regeneration of the area and we look forward to playing an integral part in the process.
"There is still much work to be done but we will continue to communicate with all parties to make Tynecastle and the surrounding area a vibrant and modern part of the city."
