According to the Spanish Footballers Union, the country's clubs owe players less than they did last season and debts have been dropped almost € 20m from the same stage last year to just under €25m. The outstanding amounts are shared between 13 Primera and Segunda Liga clubs. Logroñes has been relegated to the Tercera Liga (third division) after it was short of around € 150,000 and to pay the players €360,000 worth of outstanding wages. The club was also unable to produce the necessary bank guarantees to secure its Segunda Liga future. Xerez, Tenerife, Rayo Vallecano and Las Palmas, all escaped the drop after clearing debts totaling €7.5m with players who withdrew payment claims. Tenerife was saved from the relegation only after local authorities came to their aid and approved an extension to the € 600,000 a year subsidy up until 2010. For the first time in three seasons, all of Spanish clubs from the first and second division A met the payment deadline.
