JJB Sports to sponsor Irish Cup

JJB Sports signed an eight-year deal, reported GBP 600,000, to sponsor the FA Cup.

The new partnership between JJB and the Irish Football Association (IFA) was launched at a Belfast hotel and is thought to be one of the biggest sponsorship deals ever for the local game.

"This will help the IFA enormously in promoting the local game and lends support to the argument for reforming the domestic game," said IFA Chief Executive, Howard Wells.

"Our thanks go to JJB Sports for their commitment, not only to the Irish Cup itself, but to the IFA as part of a developing and significant relationship for both organisations."

It's a huge bonus for the IFA, considering the tournament has already kicked-off – without a main backer.

"It is the biggest domestic deal in the local game and shows how we have turned the corner," said Premier League chairman Bobby Jameson.

"The Irish Cup is the one every club wants to win. The final is a big day out and is covered live on television, so hopefully it will be a successful partnership for many years to come."

Steve Marsters, Sports Sponsorship Director for JJB, is taking pleasure in the opportunity of being part of the top knockout competition in local football.

"JJB is delighted to have secured an eight year deal with the Irish Football Association to become the official sponsor of the Irish Cup," said Marsters.

"This deal will continue to leverage the JJB brand within Northern Ireland and continue to raise our profile by gaining additional media value.

"We already have a strong link with the IFA being the 'official retail partner' and by completing this deal further acknowledges our support to the highest level."
