According to SportsPanel.Biz, at least 7,000,000 football fans in England spend approximately GBP 270 million a year on football club merchandise but do not regularly attend the matches.
SportsPanel.Biz, a new marketing firm that highlights sports did a major survey of over 5,700 football fans in December 2006. The majority of football fans in England do not attend the matches according to the survey, which focused on fans that do not go to the matches.
The survey reveals that huge profits are being lost by the clubs for not tapping into the non-attending fans and gives the facts on why fans have stopped attending football matches.
The leading reason fans do not go to the matches is high-ticket prices. Other reasons were some fans moved away from the area, fans had trouble getting to the stadium, work and family commitments, and the fact that many fans can watch the action on Sky TV.
When the fans were asked what would entice them to attend a match again, most answered lower ticket prices, but 23 percent said nothing would encourage them to attend.
Of the non-attending fans, 9 percent are enrolled as part of club membership plan and express loyalty to their favourite club.
Fans that do purchase merchandise spend a little over GBP 65 per year, although 41 percent of those surveyed did not purchase any merchandise the previous season.
The survey shows non-attending fans would buy a lot more club products and services relating to their favourite club if they are given the chance. The products include books, CD's, games, holidays and even cars and it shows the power and loyalty of a football club brand name when buying decisions are being made.
Fans also want regular club e-mail newsletters and podcasts and would like a quicker response to their e-mails.
