Beckham's salary detailed

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
Sports Illustrated reports that the amount David Beckham will earn is actually "less than the salaries of a lot of U.S. sports stars."

Beckham will earn USD 50 million in salary payments over a five-year period and not the USD 250 million that has been rumoured.

SI also set straight claims that Beckham's salary will bankrupt the MLS. MLS's owners share the costs for all players' salaries but only have to contribute USD 400,000 a year for each of the league's 13 designated-player exceptions. The remainder of Beckham's salary will come from LA Galaxy owner Phil Anschutz.

Beckham will also receive 40-50 percent of Galaxy shirt sales and an undisclosed share of ticket revenues.

"There are certain aspects of the deal that are ultimately about the upside value of the league as a whole that David can participate in," says Leiweke, the president and CEO of the Anschutz Entertainment Group.

"Our partners all had to sign off, and they did. We had a couple of interesting board calls, but they did."

Therefore, Beckham could possibly make $250 million over the next five years, but the majority of his income would come from endorsements and not from the Galaxy or MLS.
