Chelsea to cut spending

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
Expecting an influx of homegrown talent, English Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich implied the club will cut back on its transfer market spending.

Abramovich has spent millions since taking over Chelsea in 2003, but high spending by owners is one thing UEFA is targeting to change the game.

So maybe Abramovich's change of heart comes at the right time.

"Our strategy is to bring up our own players through the academy, which we have invested a lot in, and hope it gives results," he said. "We will be spending less in the transfer market in future years."

Abramovich denied that selects the team, though he did admit that he does influence Chelsea's business in the transfer market, insisting, however, that boss Jose Mourinho has final approval. At the same time, the boss said his relationship with Mourinho is not really friendly, but "warm" and there is a "great respect."

His statement follows reports that Abramovich was behind the decision to buy striker Andriy Shevchenko for GBP 30 million from AC Milan in May.
