The new president of Greek football is claiming a turnaround has been made after the domestic league was placed under new management.
President Petros Kokkalis told Reuters that after the new organisation – SuperLeague – took over the management of the competition from club bosses, attendance has risen and security has been improved.
"We have had more positive results than we had ever expected," Kokkalis said. "We never promised to improve everything within one season. You cannot become the English Premier League in a day. It is a slow building process that needs time. SuperLeague has a specific aim and that is that all teams have a UEFA licence within three years."
PAOK Salonica was denied entry to this season's UEFA Cup after qualifying, for failing to meet UEFA's financial standards.
To gain licences, clubs need to show some sort of financial security – even while holding debt – and their stadium and infrastructure must hit UEFA's requirements.
Kokkalis said SuperLeague wants to help create a commercial environment that would pull Greek clubs out of their financial woes.
