New attourney general focuse on 2003 bribe probe

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
The new attourney general of Portugal appointed an assistant to investigate bribe claims in the nation's Premier League.

Attorney General Pinto Monteiro, who was appointed on Oct. 9, has said he will give maximum priority to an inquiry into alleged bribes involving clubs and referees.

The specific investigation will focus on whether bribes were offered to referees, which began in 2003 under the case name "Apito Dourado".

The decision follows the publication of a book by an ex-girlfriend of the president of Premier League leaders Porto, which alleged the team had often benefited from bribes paid to referees. Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa has not commented.
