Russian group eye up Las Palmas

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
A consortium of Russian investors are eyeing Spanish Las Palmas.

An immediate deal has been ruled out, but president Miguel Ángel Ramirez met representatives of the consortium last week in Milan.

Media reports have suggested the investors represent Gazprom, Russia's biggest national gas company which employs over 400,000 staff and has this year obtained rights to sell products in Italy, Austria and France.

Six weeks ago, Gasprom reached an agreement to sponsor German Bundesliga club Schalke 04 until 2012.

The Canary Islands-based club has dramatically reduced debts in the past two years, falling from EUR 70 million to EUR 1.3 million. This has been possible due in large part to credit provided by the Caja de Ahorros bank and local investors.
