If they fail to qualify for the Royal League, Swedish Malmo and Djurgarden may lose over EUR 1 million apiece.
Both clubs, which had their lowest attendance records in several years, were among the favourites at the start of the season and are now in fourth and eighth position respectively.
Malmo sold 13,500 season tickets, but only 7,493 fans showed up to watch Malmo's play against Gelfle. It was the worst turnout in four years.
Djurgarden's crowd of 6,521 was it's lowest fan turnout since September 2004.
"Just the fact that we may miss playing in the Royal League means that we will lose over a million Euros," Hasse Borg, MFF sporting director said to Aftonbladet. "We kn ow that it is a really serious situation and we are orking hard on and off the pitch to rectify it."
