Principality becomes Welsh football sponsor

There's the Principality Premiership, and now the other Principality Premier League.

The confusion is a result of Principality Building Society aiding Welsh sport by agreeing to sponsor football as well as rugby.

Already sponsors of the WRU Premiership, Welsh rugby's No 1 club competition, the building society was unveiled as the new financial backers of the Welsh Premier football league.

The league, which used to be known as the League of Wales, has agreed a three-year sponsorship deal with Principality worth in excess of GBP 50,000 per season.

Officials refused to reveal exactly what the deal would be worth financially for each club, but promised that they would feel the benefits of the new sponsorship agreement.

Welsh Premier League secretary John Deakin said the deal continued a positive feel generated by the success of clubs like TNS (The New Saints), Rhyl, Llanelli and Carmarthen Town.

"We're very grateful for Principality's support, which really ensures the sponsorship of the league for the next three years, and possibly beyond," said Deakin. "It comes after an impressive couple of years in terms of our clubs' performances in Europe, and congratulations must go to Llanelli for reaching the UEFA Cup first round.

"The league's profile is increasing all the time, and it's attracting better players. It used to be the case that it attracted an awful lot of players who were on their way down, but now it consists of a lot of players who are on their way up. You only have to look at the success former Bangor midfielder Owain Tudur Jones has had at Swansea to see the potential there is in our league."

Principality, in its second year of backing the WRU Premiership, take over from Vauxhall MasterFit as the Welsh Premier League's headline sponsors.

"We are thrilled to play a significant role in a sport which, like us, is at the heart of many Welsh communities," said Peter Griffiths, Principality Building Society's chief executive.

Meanwhile Llanelli missed out on a dream UEFA Cup draw when they were paired with Danish side Odense in the second qualifying round. Peter Nicholas' team had been hoping to face Premier League giants Newcastle or crack French club Marseilles.

Instead they meet the Danes, who are managed by former Arsenal boss Bruce Rioch and who beat Hibernian to get to this stage of the UEFA Cup.
