Solidarity pays for UEFA

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
UEFA has increased its solidarity payments to European football, with clubs involved in the qualifying phases of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup, as well as the UEFA Intertoto Cup first round poised to gain higher sums.

The new system, approved by the UEFA Executive Committee, will grant each domestic champion club that fails to reach the UEFA Champions League group a bonus of EUR 160,000. The figure in 2005-2006 was roughly EUR 95,800.

Clubs that take part in the UEFA Champions League first or second qualifying rounds will receive EUR 100,000 a round, provided they do not qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage. That figure compares with approximately EUR 51,100 last season.

No solidarity payments will be made for the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. Clubs knocked out at this stage move into the UEFA Cup first round and will join the UEFA Cup solidarity scheme. They also will retain the payments made for the UEFA Champions League first and second qualifying rounds.

Each club involved in the UEFA Cup first and second qualifying rounds, as well as the first round, will receive a contribution of EUR 70,000 a round, versus the estimated EUR 51,800 last season, even if they qualify for the UEFA Cup group stage.

Seventy clubs set out in the first qualifying round, and the winners will be joined by another 29 clubs in the second qualifying round.

Clubs involved in the first, second and third rounds of the UEFA Intertoto Cup will receive a contribution of EUR 50,000 each round, as opposed to the EUR 31,900 for last season. Clubs that subsequently qualify for the UEFA Cup second qualifying round will join the UEFA Cup solidarity scheme and retain their UEFA Intertoto Cup payments.

Under a new format, eleven teams will qualify from the UEFA Intertoto Cup third round for the UEFA Cup second qualifying round.
