The increased audience for the BBC Sport website led to more than 200 million page impressions.
Traffic reached its peak when Italy played the Czech Republic, with the site registering 16.6 million page views. Figures show that the site is busiest during working hours.
Live, online streaming of World Cup matches has been accessed by 1.7 million people, with the opening match pulling in the highest at 153,909 viewers.
Research firm Nielsen NetRatings confirmed recently that the BBC's football coverage is beating United Kingdom traffic to the official World Cup website.
