UEFA won a copyright infringement court case against website operators who illegally broadcasted Champions League highlights on the Internet.
The High Court in London issued an injunction preventing the use of match footage except on authorised websites. The court also ordered that equipment used by the operators be confiscated and ordered them to pay “substantial costs,” UEFA mentioned in a statement about the case.
The amount of damages has yet to be decided.
“This is a landmark decision in favor of UEFA and of rights holders everywhere,” UEFA chief executive officer Lars-Christer Olsson said. “We see this as a major victory against the unauthorized and illegal streaming of UEFA Champions League matches over the Internet, and therefore a full endorsement for the protection of the rights of official broadcasters.”
