Spanish Football League presents match-date solutions to FIFA
FIFA & UEFA - 10 May, 2006
The Spanish Football League (LFP) has submitted a series of proposals to FIFA aimed at halting potential problems that have been threatening to disrupt the Primera Division.
With both Sevilla and Barcelona involved in the European finals, league authorities have been trying to find a way to accommodate both clubs for a match that was postponed on 23 April due to a water-logged pitch. The LFP plans to split the final two rounds of league matches into two groups, with the Sevilla-Barcelona match taking place this weekend, as well as those matches that do not affect Champions League places.
Sevilla’s match against Real Madrid and the Osasuna-Valencia contest will be played on 16 May, the eve of the Champions League final, so international players can be released the following day. The remaining match between Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona would be played 20 May without internationals because there is no longer anything at stake in that match.
The LFP originally wanted to extend the season by a week and play the final round of matches on 20 May, but that was denied by FIFA because it overrode an agreement to release World Cup players by 15 May. FIFA suggested playing the Sevilla-Barcelona match on 20 May without any players involved in the World Cup, but Spanish clubs reckoned this gave Sevilla, which still could qualify for the Champions League, an advantage.
