A Chinese businessman suspected of being a key figure in a Belgian match-fixing scandal this season has denied any wrongdoing, reported Reuters.
Ye Zheyun, 41, said he has never attempted to fix a match or to corrupt anyone.
“I'm not in Belgium any more,” Ye said in a statement published by L'Equipe Magazine, that was passed on by his Paris-based lawyer. “I have never been involved in any match-fixing.
“I have nothing to do with the world of betting. Soccer is a passion to me and what I wanted was to invest money in soccer.”
Belgian police launched an investigation after internet company Betfair noticed heavy betting patterns relating to La Louviere’s 3-1 win over St. Truiden on 29 October. Both clubs have denied any involvement. In March, Filippo Gaone, the chairman of first division club La Louviere, and club lawyer Laurent Denis were charged with fraud-related offences.
