A Peter Gadsby-led consortium has completed its takeover of English Derby County.
The club has been reeling since being relegated from the Premier League in 2002, though current chairman John Sleightholme has been a key player in efforts to stabilise the club.
But Sleightholme wished to sell the club, and the consortium has taken over, with former vice-chairman Gadsby as the new chairman.
“It has been a long and difficult process, needing patience and perseverance, particularly in regard to securing ownership of Pride Park Stadium,” said Mike Horton, a member of the five-man consortium. “We would like to thank the fans for their support over the last few months and without their encouragement we may not have got to this point.”
Derby County currently is 19th in the Championship League, and the team has had to fight to stay in the division.
The changes behind the scenes haven’t helped, but Sleightholme believes this is now behind them and the club can now move on.
“I’m delighted that the local consortium has taken over, and I wish Peter Gadsby and his colleagues all the best in trying to get the club to where we all want to be, secure in the Premiership,” Sleightholme said. “The fans wanted the club to return to local ownership, a view with which I agreed, and hopefully the club can now move forward.”
