Southampton and European regional airline Flybe reached a three-year deal to make Flybe the club’s new shirt sponsor, and the airline also will sponsor Norwich City, the EDP revealed. Financial details were not released for either agreement.
The agreement will Southampton gives the low-fare airline exclusive branding on all of the club’s first and reserve team strips, and replicas will be available to supporters from July of this year.
Flybe expects to sign a “multi-million-pound” three-year deal with Norwich City later this week, with a formal announcement being made some time next week. Details of the kit that Norwich City players will wear in the Championship next season have yet to be revealed.
The airline plans to fly the Norwich first team to matches around the United Kingdom whenever possible, but there are no plans for the club to have an aircraft of its own. Norwich City currently travels to away games in a Lotus-Proton coach, courtesy of its current sponsor.
Flybe, who also sponsor English Premier League club Birmingham City and English Nationwide Conference club Exeter City, will reward fans of both clubs with promotions such as flight ticket giveaways at home games.
Despite the various sponsorships, there is no conflict of interest.
“There is a big relevance for Flybe in Norwich,” said a source close to the Norwich City deal. “They are heavily involved in football at Birmingham and Exeter and have also had relationships with Bristol City and Southampton and they tend to use football as a way of giving something back to the community.”
Flybe tends to sponsor clubs in areas that serve as major operational bases for the airline. Norwich has become a major base for the company in the last 12 months, and they have been serving the Southampton airport since 2003.
The deals with Birmingham and Exeter each have one more season with Flybe having exercised its option to renew the deals. Birmingham’s deal has been extended for two years beyond the two originally in the deal, while Exeter's deal was for three years, extended by another one.
There is a chance Flybe will have two teams in the Championship next season should Birmingham drop, but the source said that could be a positive for Flybe. “I think it would be favourable - Flybe could see the potential of two teams playing each other,” he said.
While Proton and Lotus Cars said they were happy to continue their association with the club, they decided on a new strategy seeking more direct marketing opportunities rather than the branding provided by shirt sponsorship.
A Norwich City spokesman said, “We have not signed any agreement with any sponsor at this moment in time but as soon as that changes we will let the fans and the media know.”
