FIFA SETS UP COMPANY TO MONITOR BETTING AT WORLD CUP

According to FIFA general secretary Urs Linsi, the world’s governing body for football has set up a company to monitor suspicious betting patterns for this summer’s World Cup in Germany. The company, FIFA Early Warning System GmbH, was created in January as a response to the betting scandal involving German referee Robert Hoyzer, writes Reuters. It will work in conjunction with companies who specialise in spotting attempts to manipulate games.

“This company will be monitoring unusual betting in all competitions, including in the World Cup,” FIFA general secretary Linsi said on Friday. “I think we've taken the necessary steps to prevent match-fixing. And this is not just for the World Cup.”

Hoyzer was found guilty late last year of fixing matches in a EUR 2 million betting fraud.
